Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (SHI) has signed the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) as of January 15, 2025. This commitment reinforces SHI’s commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices.
The UNGC is a leading global initiative that brings together the UN and private sector companies and organizations to build a more sustainable and inclusive international society.
By signing the UNGC, SHI pledges to uphold the ten principles related to human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. This commitment is made at the highest level, with the endorsement of SHI’s President and CEO, Shinji Shimomura.
This significant step aligns with SHI’s newly established Purpose, “Enhance society and those within it with compassion through our ownership and vision,” which drives the company’s sustainability management strategy across the entire group.
SHI recognises the importance of collaborating with stakeholders to meet global standards and contribute positively to society. Joining the UNGC provides a framework for SHI to strengthen its existing efforts further and play a more active role in the global community.
About the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles
The ten principles cover the following areas:
- Human Rights: Supporting and respecting the protection of human rights; ensuring non-complicity in human rights abuses.
- Labour: Upholding freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining; eliminating forced and compulsory labour; abolishing child labour; and eliminating discrimination in employment and occupation.
- Environment: Supporting a precautionary approach to environmental challenges; taking initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and encouraging the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
- Anti-Corruption: Working against corruption in all forms, including extortion and bribery.
