Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and CEO: Shinji Shimomura; hereinafter “SHI”) today announced the integration of its laser business, currently within the Mechatronics Division, with Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ion Technology Co., Ltd. (SMIT), a wholly owned subsidiary specialising in ion implanters.
Effective 1st January 2025, this strategic move will strengthen SHI’s semiconductor offerings under a single entity, enhancing its ability to provide comprehensive solutions to customers worldwide.
This integration aligns with SHI’s Medium-Term Management Plan 2026, which identifies the global semiconductor sector as a key investment area. By combining the strengths of both businesses, SHI aims to drive innovation and accelerate the development of next-generation laser annealing equipment and ion implanters to meet evolving market demands.
A company spokesperson said: “The consolidated entity will leverage the combined global sales channels and customer networks of both organisations to expand market reach. Furthermore, it will enhance customer value by offering integrated solutions that combine laser annealing and ion implantation technologies, two crucial processes in semiconductor manufacturing. This integration will streamline operations and optimise resource allocation under a unified management structure.”
SHI’s Mechatronics Division is renowned for its laser annealing equipment, particularly in the power semiconductor market. SMIT is a leading supplier of cutting-edge ion implanters. The integration of these complementary technologies will enable SHI to provide more comprehensive and innovative solutions to semiconductor manufacturers.
The integrated company has manufacturing facilities in Saijyo and Yokosuka in Japan and sales and service locations in Europe, USA, China, Taiwan, Korea and Japan, as well as agents in Singapore and Malaysia.
